Gregg Berhalter ‘is set to open new contract talks with USMNT following Qatar’s World Cup exit…but the coach is considering European club opportunities before committing to the national team’

US soccer coach Gregg Berhalter could sign a new deal with US Soccer to stay in his job, according to a new report.

Although Berhalter’s current contract will expire at the end of the year, ESPN has reported that the USSF will soon begin talks with him for a new agreement.

The coach was hired on December 2, 2018, after a team led by Jurgen Klinsmann and Bruce Arena in CONCACAF qualifying failed to reach that year’s World Cup.

Berhalter returned them to the world stage, as they eventually fell 3-1 to the Netherlands in the round of 16 last weekend after navigating a group with Wales, England and Iran.

If the 49-year-old is given a new contract to coach the USA, he will likely be in charge of the 2026 World Cup that will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The talks are also reportedly on track for the United States to be part of the Copa América 2024.

However, Berhalter’s permanence in the United States is not a certainty.

ESPN quoted a source who “acknowledged that it is still very early in the process,” while other sources told the outlet that Berhalter is interested in “exploring” club opportunities in Europe.

Berhalter has coaching and playing experience there, having coached Swedish side Hammarby from 2011 to 2013.

He also spent time abroad with German clubs Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich, as well as England’s Crystal Palace.

Berhalter’s USMNT qualified for the World Cup after winning the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup titles, and finishing third in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying behind Canada and Mexico.

The United States reached the round of 16 by drawing with Wales and England and beating Iran.
