Great Australian Bake Off star Jeremy Allan closes Urban Desserts in Glenelg, Adelaide
- Popular dessert restaurant closed
- Urban Desserts will no longer be active
A popular dessert restaurant in Adelaide opened by a TV baker has closed its doors less than two years after opening due to rising cost-of-living pressures.
Jeremy Allan, who took part in The Great Australian Bake Off in 2016, announced the closure of Urban Desserts in Glenelg last month.
The shop, which sold a range of cakes and other desserts, opened in September 2021 but struggled as traffic fell and costs rose.
Mr Allan confirmed the closure, saying the main reason the store closed was a lack of foot traffic and higher rents.

“(There was also) a lack of support or negotiation from landlords and realtors with small businesses,” Allan said.
The news came after a sign was reportedly tacked to the southern suburb store without notice, thanking past customers.
“We did our best,” the message read. “Unfortunately, Urbans in Glenelg is no longer open due to lack of support.
“We want to thank the lovely people who came in when we were open.
“We know you’ve been trying to spread the word, but it’s just costing us more to be here than we could earn.”
Urban Desserts’ two other stores, the Colonnades Shopping Center and Morphett Vale, will remain open.
Mr Allan told 7 News that the other shops continued to do well, with Colonnades ‘particularly booming among the locals’.
“(The closure) is certainly not a reflection of our other stores and locations and they will absolutely remain open,” Mr Allan said.

The closures come as businesses across the country are feeling the pressure of rising costs, putting pressure on customers as well.
Caruso’s Italian restaurant in Gymea in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire closed in March because of “greedy businesses” and the cost of living.
Owner Rocky and Kerrin Pitarelli told news.com that the cost of essentials, such as fresh produce alone, had become “unbearable.”
