GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: Female Brazilian fighter suffers one of the most gruesome cuts in UFC history after being sliced open by elbow above her eye

  • Mayra Bueno Silva’s match was stopped after the doctor looked at the cut
  • She had been split open with a nasty elbow and the cut was down to the bone

Brazilian fighter Mayra Bueno Silva suffered one of the worst cuts in UFC history on Saturday night.

In the second round of her UFC 303 bout against Macy Chiasson, Silva was landed a slashing elbow while her opponent was on top of her on the ground.

It was immediately clear how serious the wound was when blood came out, but it took a while for the referee to intervene.

He stopped the action in the second round so the doctor came into the octagon and assessed the damage.

Silva’s cut extended all the way to her eyebrow line and hung open, reportedly deep enough to reach the bone.

The massive wound is one of the worst in recent history and forced the fighting to be stopped

It was wise to stop the match and rule that Chiasson had won the match via TKO, despite Silva wanting to continue.

If she had received another blow to the wound, it would have been much worse and perhaps in time she will come to the conclusion that immediate medical attention was the right decision.

It was a bitter end for the 33-year-old, who had made the most of the opening round, landing heavy shots and working relentlessly against her bantamweight opponent.

However, her elbow proved to be her undoing and there was a slight disagreement in the commentary box over whether the fight should continue.

The Brazilian wanted to continue, but the doctor insisted the cut was too deep

Joe Rogan suggested that if the fighter wants to continue, it should be allowed, while former two-weight UFC champion Daniel Cormier joked that his broadcast partner “just likes violence.”

The aftercare given to the fighters is known to be of a high standard and Silva will be stitched up quickly after being taken away, although it will take months of recovery before she can spar again.
