After sharing the photo with other parents, opinions were divided with some horrified by the excessive selection.
‘Sorry, I don’t want to be a negative Nancy and I don’t want to offend by this, but this is ridiculous. She is a baby and she will never remember all these things,” wrote one woman.
‘Don’t be offended when the baby gets rid of the wrapping after the second gift,’ said another.
A third pointed out the number of batteries that would likely be needed for some of the toys.
“I’m imagining how many batteries it’s going to replace, our toys all seem to run out at the same time and all of a sudden I need multiple battery packs in bulk at once,” he said.
But at the opposite end of the spectrum, many praised grandparents.
“I actually love this and I love seeing these kinds of posts for other kids!” wrote a mother.
Another shared her own personal experience, writing: ‘I grew up homeless, without gifts, food, necessities due to being in an abusive and neglected foster home or homes and it really warms my heart to see others being spoiled.
‘For the first time in 21 years I have been able to afford Christmas! And I’ve been helping families with gifts.
After reading the divisive comments, Michigan offered an explanation by updating the title of the Facebook post.
‘I’m sorry for those who are offended or have a negative opinion. Baby has over-excited grandma on her first Christmas (she’s overcompensating for not being an available mom in my childhood)’, she wrote.
‘Everything is being distributed in gifts for this and next Christmas, his first birthday, gifts and donations.
I’m not taking credit for this or forcing the comparison, I took the photo (but didn’t buy anything).
I am aware of the less fortunate, I am aware that this is excessive. The crazy hoarded amount of stuff we don’t need has been donated to a foster company for children born addicted.
He clarified that the post was meant to be “lighthearted” and said “I’m sorry,” but many said he didn’t need to apologize to strangers on the internet.
