Grandmother lucky to be alive after ceiling collapses on her bed in her Melbourne home

A grandmother is lucky to be alive after her ceiling collapsed on her as she slept.

The 90-year-old grandmother was in her bed in St Albans, in Melbourne’s northwest, about 5.30am on Monday.

The ceiling suddenly fell, leaving her buried in rubble.

The woman’s granddaughter, Teresa, who did not want her last name used, spoke 9News that her mother had heard the commotion and called her for help.

“Mommy heard a loud crash,” she said.

“She said she had to come over: ‘The roof has collapsed and grandma is stuck inside.’

“Grandma screamed, ‘Help me, help me.’

After Teresa and her mother arrived at her grandmother’s house, they were unable to open the bedroom door to help the elderly woman, so they contacted emergency services.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived a few minutes later, after which rescuers entered the home with a ladder and bolt cutters.

After quickly gaining access to the front room of the home, the grandmother was found under the rubble, near the door.

Emergency services were surprised to find the grandmother largely unharmed. She only suffered from a painful neck where she was hit by falling pieces of plaster.

Although the cause of the collapse is unknown, Teresa said the family was aware of a crack in the ceiling that appeared in the days leading up to the incident.
