Grand National-winning jockey Graham Lee in intensive care after being removed from the stalls at Newcastle Racecourse

Grand National winner Graham Lee was taken to hospital and is in intensive care after being removed from his seat at Newcastle Racecourse on Friday afternoon.

It is believed the jockey encountered problems in the boxes and was let go at the opening of Ben Macdui at the start of the race.

Lee, who won the world’s most famous show jumping race with Amberleigh House in 2004, is said to have suffered a neck injury after the fall, according to a statement released on Saturday by the Injured Jockey Fund.

“He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he remains in intensive care with neck injuries,” the statement said. ‘He will undergo further tests today to assess the extent of the injury.’

According to the Sun, Cieren Fallon was also treated by medics after his horse Persian Blue broke under the gate.

Lee, 47, enjoyed a successful show jumping career before switching to flat, and has ridden more than 1,000 winners.
