Gran Turismo trailer brings an incredible true story to the big screen

The true story of a young video game prodigy turned real-life racing driver comes to the big screen with a new trailer for Gran Turismo.

The film from Sony Pictures tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who became the third GT Academy winner in 2011 and the youngest ever winner at just 19 years old.

Despite never being in a real race car, he beat 90,000 entrants to win GT Academy, giving him the chance to compete in the Dubai 24 Hour race.

Archie Madekwe plays Jann Mardenborough, with Djimon Hounsou as his father, Orlando Bloom as Danny Moore, a character based on real life GT Academy founder Darren Cox and David Harbor as Jann’s trainer, Jack Salter.

The film comes from director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), working from a script by Zach Baylin (Creed III), Will Dunn (Ms. Marvel) and Jason Hall (American Sniper), in theaters August 11.

The trailer begins with Mardenborough playing Gran Turismo 25, complete with a steering wheel and pedals connected to his computer.

He asks a friend who he thinks is the best driver, and the friend says Rory, but Jann brags, “I’d dust him off in a lap!”

Jann’s dad Steve says, “All you have to do is play video games with crazy dreams about race cars,” while Jann shoots back with, “Dad, you’re the one who always told us to do something we love.”

Steve claims, “Do you know what race cars cost? Look around, it’s not our world, son,” as we see images of his working-class upbringing.

Eventually, Jann learns of a competition known as Gran Turismo Academy, which Danny describes as: “The best Gran Turismo players in the world are given the opportunity to compete in professional races,” as we see in footage of the children in the League.

Danny’s plan is met with skepticism by trainer Jack Salter, who says, “Do you really think you’re going to take a kid who plays video games in his bedroom and strap him to a 200-mph rocket?” It will tear them to pieces.’

Jack claims it won’t work because “the guys who race are elite athletes, your kids are skinny little gamer kids.”

“Well, that’s where you come in,” Danny says to Jack, as we watch footage of Jack training Jann and the other GT Academy candidates.

Jack, yelling into a megaphone, jokes, “This must be a new experience for you, using your legs,” as one of the contestants stops running and pukes.

Jack explains, “When you’re in a race, the cockpit will be 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the G-forces will be twice what an astronaut feels on takeoff.”

Jann is in a car when he yells that he can’t see anything before blasting the tires, as Jack jokes, “Does that get you extra points in the game?”

Jack tells Danny that “this whole thing is insane,” but out of everyone before him, Jann is the best, while Jack tells Jann that he won the contest, letting out a shriek.

“Welcome to Team Nissan,” Danny says to Jann as they hug for his opening press conference.

On the way to Jann’s first race, Danny explains, “The other racers will hate you,” as we see another race ramming Jann’s car into the wall, who then starts a fight.

Jack also explains, “If you miss a line in the game, you reset. If you miss it on the track, you could die,” as we watch a car take off before landing in flames.

Jann proclaims, “I know this song. I’ve raced it a thousand times,” as he speeds past other racers as the trailer comes to a close.
