Gran Turismo barely beats Barbie at the box office with $17.3M… as fans flock to theaters on Sunday for $4 National Cinema Day tickets

After four consecutive weeks at the box office, Barbie was ousted by Warner Bros.’ Blue Beetle took first place last weekend, though Barbie’s stamina has kept director Greta Gerwig’s film in second place, while Beetle drops from first to third.

Barbie is also said to have the largest attendance for National Film Day, while Oppenheimer remains strong in the top 5, passing $300 million domestically.

Gran Turismo hit almost the exact middle of the $13 million to $22 million tracking range that box office forecasters were eyeing at $17.3 million.

The film opened in 3,856 theaters, grossing an average of $4,486 per screen during its opening weekend.

By comparison, when Barbie opened in 4,243 theaters in mid-July, it posted a per-screen average of $38,185 with a strong debut of $162 million.

Still, Gran Turismo – loosely based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo video game player turned real-life race car driver – can be quite uphill for profit.

Gran Turismo – starring Orlando Bloom, David Harbor and Archie Madekwe as Jann Mardenborough – was produced on a budget of $60 million.

Barbie took in $17.1 million in second place, a minuscule drop of just 18.7% in its fifth weekend, even after losing 267 screens, for a per-screen average of $4,577.

Barbie currently stands at $594.8 million domestically and $1.340 billion worldwide after just over a month in theaters.

While most major studio movies typically drop 50% or more every weekend after their debut, Barbie has yet to drop more than 50%, a testament to its staying power.

Blue Beetle, on the other hand, fell in line with a 49% drop for a second weekend and a third-place finish of $12.7 million.

The DC Universe superhero movie continued to run in 3,871 theaters for a declining per-screen average of $3,297.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer bagged another $9 million (only down 16.1%) in fourth place, bringing its domestic total to just over $300 million, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem rounded out the Top 5 with $6.1 million.

Meg 2: The Trench was in sixth place with $5.1 million, while Strays dropped to seventh with $4.6 million.

Liam Neeson’s Retribution debuted in eighth place with $3.3 million, while The Hill debuted in ninth place with $2.5 million and Haunted Mansion rounded out the top 10 with $2.1 million.
