Big changes are on the way, as the academy made some major additions earlier this year with five new categories, including Songwriter of the Year honoring music’s best composer and a special award for a song for social change.

The non-classical songwriters category will recognize one individual who was the “most prolific” non-performing and non-producing songwriter for a range of new work.

It will take a different approach than song of the year, which rewards the songwriters who wrote the lyrics or melodies for one song.

The Songwriter of the Year, including non-classical field: Amy Allen, Nija Charles, Tobias Jesso Jr., The-Dream and Laura Veltz.

The new category for songwriters is a huge step forward. Last year, an update to the rules allowed any songwriter, producer, engineer, or artist on an album nominated for Album of the Year to eventually earn a nomination.

The four other categories include Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, Alternative Music Performance, Americana Music Performance, and Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media.

One highly decorated artist who was not nominated was Bruno Mars, who along with Anderson Paak withdrew their Silk Sonic album from consideration at the Grammy Awards – a year after taking home a whopping four awards at the 2022 ceremony .

Bruno, 37, who formed the musical super duo with Anderson, 37, in 2021, told Rolling stone that the pair’s only album, An Evening With Silk Sonic, would not be submitted for nomination at the 2023 awards.

The artist said they made the decision not to push the album forward for this year’s ceremony, feeling they “would be crazy to ask for any more” than they already received at the Grammys of 2022 – where they won four. awards for the album’s first track, Leave the Door Open.

Shock: One highly decorated artist who was not nominated was Bruno Mars, who along with Anderson Paak withdrew their Silk Sonic album from Grammy Awards consideration (pictured while accepting the Record of the Year gong at the awards ceremony 2022)

Bruno and Anderson’s hit won the coveted Record of the Year trophy – and the album it’s now featured on was a favorite to win Album of the Year in 2023.

But Bruno insisted the duo feel they “won the moment the world reacted to Leave the Door Open,” adding that “everything else was just the icing on the cake.”

Bruno continued: ‘We really put everything on this record, but Silk Sonic wants to graciously, humbly and above all sexually refrain from submitting our album this year.’

“We hope we can celebrate a great year of music with everyone and enjoy the party. Thank you for helping Silk Sonic thrive.”
