Graeme Souness reveals he underwent emergency heart surgery after suffering an ‘episode’ at home while watching England’s win over Finland

Graeme Souness has revealed he had to undergo emergency heart surgery after suffering a ‘seizure’ during England’s recent UEFA Nations League victory over Finland on September 10.

The Liverpool legend has been battling heart problems since his retirement in 1991. At the age of 38, he was diagnosed with coronary heart disease.

Souness has also previously undergone triple bypass surgery, but remains an enthusiastic and active figure as an expert and charity fundraiser.

The 71-year-old is one of the Premier League’s most popular commentators. His column in Mail Sport offers expert insight and is also a favourite with several broadcasters, where Souness is often asked for his verdict.

However, a recent scare that occurred while Souness was at home has left fans worried. The Scottish legend has explained the circumstances surrounding his latest emergency.

Thanks to a successful operation to insert a new stent into one of his coronary arteries, Souness is back on form and is grateful for the time he has spent with his cardiology experts as he continues his recovery.

“We had a little setback last week,” Souness told the BBC, explaining his fears for his heart.

‘I had a bit of an episode 10 days ago when I was watching England play Finland and I got up at half past ten to make a cup of tea and I felt chest pain.

“Without even thinking about it, three days later I had a couple of stents put in one of my coronary arteries. I feel great,” he added.

“I have a great cardiologist, Suneel Talwar, in Bournemouth. He has looked after me for 15 years and I am in good hands,” Souness said.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle manager was rushed to hospital in 2015 after suffering a sudden heart attack. He required immediate treatment but thankfully pulled through.

Souness recently attempted to raise money for DEBRA, the butterfly skin charity, but was unable to complete the cycling leg of the challenge last week until chest pains prevented him from taking part.
