‘Got a bit of Walter White there’: John Fetterman is compared to Breaking Bad character after shaving his signature goatee into a mustache after losing a bet with his 13-year-old son
Democrat Sen. John Fetterman debuted a new look on Saturday that he literally wore because he lost a bet with his 13-year-old son — and people are drawing comparisons to Walter White.
Fetterman, who made headlines about his six week hospital stay depression earlier in 2023, posted a tweet showing him with his goatee shaved off, leaving only a mustache behind.
“Lost a bet with Karl,” Fetterman tweeted, referring to his 13-year-old son. His wife, Gisele Baretto Fetterman, later tweeted that the bet was about a game of chess between the two.
Fetterman’s wife seemed to approve of the new look, but couldn’t help joking that “I never knew he had a chin” over a photo of the two on “date night.”
She included a screenshot of a text message from Fetterman showing off the mustache, to which she replied, “I like it.”

The photo drew comparisons to many real and fictional mustachioed men, including Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad
Others on social media commented that he resembled several celebrities, one of which made the comparison to Bryan Cranston’s famous role as Walter White in Breaking Bad.
“I have some Walter White there, handy for negotiations,” said an approving response.
When one Twitter user suggested, “You look like a shop teacher. Just say,” replied another tersely, “more like a chemistry teacher.”
Walter van Cranston works as a chemistry teacher before swerving to sell meth to try and keep his family intact as he dies of cancer.
“You can now go as G. Gordon Liddy for Halloween,” another commenter added, referring to the infamous former FBI agent.
A kinder commentator joked that Fetterman “Dr. Oz defeats, bows and in Dr. Phil changes’.
Fetterman sent daytime TV doctor Mehmet Oz to the November 2022 election.
The Senator was profiled for a cover story for Time magazine this month and said it was his debate against Republican Senate hopeful Mehmet Oz that led to his depressive episode.

He even revealed that he recorded a goodbye message to his kids after suffering a stroke last spring.
The senator still suffers from auditory processing problems 14 months after the stroke.
While the debate against Oz was a breaking point, the January suicide of New York Times journalist Blake Hounshell — who knew Fetterman personally — hit Fetterman hard and contributed to his decision to seek help.
Just days before the Democratic primary, Fetterman encountered his first major challenge in a year: the stroke.
On the campaign trail near Lancaster, Gisele noticed her husband’s face was sinking in and immediately rushed him to a hospital.
The bet involved a game of chess between Fetterman and his 13-year-old son Karl
He easily won the Democratic primary and spent the day of his victory sedated, wearing a pacemaker.
Time reported that Fetterman recorded a video message for his children — Karl, 14, Grace, 11, and August, 9 — in case he passed away.
Fetterman spent most of the summer off the campaign trail recovering from the stroke.
By August, however, he had returned and was able to pass a standard stump speech, making some mistakes, but the debate was the event that really showed how much progress he still had to make to fully recover from a stroke.
Despite the debate performance, Fetterman beat Oz, the Trump-backed TV doctor, by five points.
