Gorgeous stone ‘fairytale’ cottage in sleepy town with original 1920s interiors sparks furious bidding war after being listed for bargain price

A beautiful stone “fairytale” cottage in a sleepy Maine town has sparked a furious bidding war.

The charming two-bedroom home in Veazie was on the market for just under $300,000.

The 1,150-square-foot cottage dates from the early 1900s and still features much of the original interior.

Despite requiring extensive renovation work, including to the roof, windows and electrical system, the quirky property received 50 inquiries.

“I didn’t know a pile of bricks with a roof on top would be so attractive,” real estate agent Sheldon Anderson of Realty of Maine in Bangor told the Bangor Daily News.

‘It’s an iconic spot. It’s such a unicorn. You don’t see these stone houses.’

The house was ultimately purchased above asking price by a buyer from South Carolina, who plans to renovate the property to live in it full-time.

The new owner, who has not yet been identified, was so impressed with the property that he bought it without ever setting foot inside.

“There were people inquiring locally, but they just couldn’t compete,” Anderson said.

“I hope this guy does what he says he’s going to do with it, because I think a lot of people will be happy to see it revived.”

The property was built in 1928 as a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house.

The interior still shows the hallmarks of its heyday, including hardwood floors and impressive fireplaces.

However, the original stone facade needs improvement, as does some rotten woodwork around the property.

“The interior trims, finishes and features remain virtually unchanged,” Anderson said.

‘This would be a great project for any home renovation enthusiast. There is a relatively new natural gas boiler that currently heats the space. With a little TLC this would be a comfortable space for any new resident.

‘A truly unique opportunity for the creative handyman. There aren’t many of these historic structures left that have the good bones that this has.”

The charming cottage is set in 1.2 hectares of land along a leafy street, just two miles from the Bangor City Forest.
