Three Michelin star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay forced to tell diners to smarten up, urging customers to ‘avoid shorts, tracksuits and hoodies’

It’s one of the most exclusive eateries in London, so you might assume that customers would do their best to look presentable.

But Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, the TV chef’s three-Michelin-starred flagship, is forced to give guests a friendly reminder to refresh.

Would you wear a tracksuit or hoodie to a restaurant?

The Chelsea establishment now politely asks guests to ‘avoid shorts, tracksuits and hoodies’, although there is no mention of Hell Kitchen’s chef physically ejecting them if they disobey.

The advice – which has been tightened and made more explicit in the past year – is prominently displayed on the website when making a booking.

It reads: ‘We want all our guests to feel free to express their own individual style, but we do ask guests to avoid shorts, tracksuits and hoodies. Smart trainers are fine. We know that many of our guests like to dress smartly, which we appreciate! Ultimately, we want every guest to feel at home.’

Ramsay’s first solo venture opened in 1998 and was awarded three Michelin stars in 2001, which it still holds. The a la carte dishes include Cornish turbot and Herdwick hogget, both priced at £180.

The Michelin Guide describes the restaurant in compelling terms, saying: ‘Head Chef and co-owner Matt Abé interprets Ramsay’s style impeccably, with signature dishes such as the lobster, langoustine and salmon ravioli executed as superbly as ever.

‘Embodying the chefs’ perfectly considered contrasts of flavor and texture, and their lightness of touch, you can’t go wrong with the roast veal sweetbreads.’

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay declined to comment yesterday.

But the restaurant is not the first to take action against hoodies.

Another celebrity hangout in Mayfair, Sexy Fish, made headlines in 2020 when pop star Jess Glynne was refused entry because she was wearing a hoodie.

The singer called the restaurant’s decision “pure discrimination,” but most online commenters sided with the venue, saying her outfit clearly violated their even stricter policy, which at the time stated: “We request that guests do not wear sportswear , wear beachwear, ripped jeans, flip-flops, sliders or training shoes.’
