Republicans allege President Joe Biden was involved in his son Hunter’s controversial foreign business deals that reportedly spanned 50 different countries, lawmakers said at a news conference Thursday.
It comes a day after the GOP captured 218 seats in the House of Representatives, strengthening their majority — and investigative powers — in the next Congress.
The president has long denied involvement in and knowledge of his son’s foreign dealings — some of which are under investigation by federal authorities.
But Rep. James Comer accused Biden of being “chairman of the board” over his family’s business dealings, even claiming that the White House spent more than $250,000 to fend off negative stories about Hunter.
“This is an investigation into Joe Biden,” he said. “I think we’ve provided evidence of why we think it’s important, and we’ll continue with that.”
Comer said he would even like members of the Biden family to testify before the House if asked, but said the main focus of their investigation at this point was to access banking records.
“As part of our investigation, we have shared, if not shared, evidence that Hunter and Joe Biden’s finances, credit cards and bank accounts were mixed,” the Republican lawmaker said.
“One of Hunter’s close associates, Eric Schwerin, had access to Joe Biden’s money and wrote checks to pay Hunter back.”
He said some accounts related to the Biden family raised “red flags” about “suspicious or illegal activity.”
At least one of those red flags, known as “SARs,” reportedly “links Hunter Biden and his business associates to international human trafficking, among other illegal activities,” Comer said.
“We have repeatedly called on Biden’s Treasury Department to release additional financial documents to the committee’s Republicans, but so far the Treasury Department has refused,” the lawmaker said. “We want to know what the Biden administration has been trying to hide from the American people and why they are not being transparent.”
Hunter Biden’s business dealings are the subject of the House GOP’s first announced investigation into the party’s new majority in the lower chamber of Congress
He claimed that Hunter went a step further and tried to quash these bank warnings — reportedly with the help of a Clinton administration official.
