GOP candidates make last-minute appeals to Iowan voters a day before caucuses. Follow live updates

With just one day to go until the Iowa presidential caucuses, candidates are urging their supporters to brave the frigid and blustery winds to help them through the Republicans’ first presidential contest.

The final Des Moines Register/NBC News poll before Monday night’s caucuses showed former President Donald Trump maintaining a formidable lead, backed by nearly half of likely caucusgoers. Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and governor of South Carolina, and Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, remain locked in a tight battle for second place.

Trump, Haley and DeSantis are spreading through Iowa on Sunday to meet voters. Haley was already forced to cancel a personal stop due to poor weather conditions.

DUBUQUE – Haley’s campaign stop in Dubuque was canceled Sunday morning due to poor travel conditions, the campaign said about an hour before the scheduled event.

Voters walking into the hall were told the news by campaign workers, some of whom offered a T-shirt, hat or yard sign as consolation.

John Schmid, 69, was already waiting at the location when the event was canceled.

“I don’t blame her,” said the retiree from Asbury, a few miles outside of Dubuque. He is already a supporter of Haley, but he wanted to see the “refreshing” candidate in person. He hopes Haley will do well at Monday’s caucuses, which he will attend despite the bitter cold.

“It’s just part of life in Iowa in January,” he said.

Haley swapped the in-person event for a virtual town hall.
