The three young men were driving around in a blue Toyota Corolla hatchback when the vehicle left the road, rolled several times and struck a tree in Gooseberry Hill, 21 kilometers east of Perth, about 8.40pm on Wednesday.

The driver, a 17-year-old male, and an 18-year-old male passenger were taken to Royal Perth Hospital by the RAC Rescue helicopter.

A 16-year-old male passenger who suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash was rushed to Midland Hospital where he died a short time later.

A Royal Perth Hospital spokesperson said the two other teenagers were in a critical condition on Thursday morning.

WA Premier Roger Cook said the death of a teenager in a car crash was “terrible and tragic”.

‘We know these children are looking forward to the future. And just because of a split-second decision, a lack of control, they could lose their lives,” Cook said.

“It’s just another reminder to anyone who gets behind the wheel of a car to think about the consequences. ‘

‘Think about your safety. Think about the safety of others.’
