Goonies sequel thrown into doubt after Corey Feldman DENIES any knowledge of plans to reunite 40 years after the original – as insiders reveal no one has been informed
The long-awaited Goonies sequel has been cast into doubt after Corey Feldman denied knowledge of the project. Insiders also say the cast members have not been told of any plans to reunite.
Fans expressed concern last week after it was reported that a second film had been greenlit nearly four decades after the original.
Although it was rumored that the original all-star cast would return for the film, a source has revealed to DailyMail.com that neither Sean Astin nor Feldman, both 53, have been asked to reprise their roles.
“The Goonies sequel, which many actors have been dreaming of for a long time, is not happening,” they said.
‘If Sean Astin or Corey Feldman are connected to this alleged sequel, let alone everyone else, there’s one problem: No one told them.
According to insiders, Corey Feldman (pictured) and Sean Astin have not been approached for the long-awaited Goonies sequel
A source told DailyMail.com that the duo have not been informed about the project, raising doubts over whether a second film is in the works.
“But the rumors have shown that people would be interested in it and the nostalgia for Beetlejuice makes people talk about bringing back older franchises.”
They claimed that efforts have been underway for years to bring back the beloved classic, but that the “magic of the Goonies movie makes it virtually impossible to bring back.”
“Nothing is going to change now,” they added.
Feldman denied all speculation about X, telling fans he is “100% certain” a sequel is not in the works. He took the opportunity to promote his new film, The Birthday.
He wrote: ‘IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERYONE IS ASKING…I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL YOU 100% NO! I HAVE NO INFORMATION THAT THERE IS A SEQUEL IN THE WORLD BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS I HAVE A SURPRISING EXCLUSIVE TEASER TRAILER FOR YOU FOR MY FAVORITE WORK THAT IS FINALLY COMING TO THEATRES SOON…..’
Last week it was reported that the 1985 classic produced by Steven Spielberg would be making a grand comeback, with The Sun claiming that production would begin next summer.
“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally happening,” a source told the publication.
“The plan is to start developing ideas for the sequel next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.”
It was reported that the original cast would return to the set within months as a sequel to the Hollywood classic was recently ‘confirmed’
But a source told DailyMail.com: ‘The Goonies sequel, which many of the cast have long dreamed of, is not happening’
Feldman denied speculation about X, telling fans he knows “100%” there is no sequel in the works, while taking the opportunity to promote his new film, The Birthday.
“The original is so culturally important that Warner Bros. knows they have to get it absolutely right,” the source added.
The Goonies, written by Chris Columbus, has become a classic of 80s cinema. The film is known for its mix of action, humor and emotion.
The film follows a group of kids from the Goon Docks neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, who discover an old treasure map in the attic of one of their homes.
This map takes them on an exciting quest for the long-lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary pirate from the 17th century.
Along the way, they must outsmart a criminal family, the Fratellis, who are also looking for the treasure.
The film was directed by an all-star cast, including Astin as Mikey Walsh, the optimistic leader of the Goonies determined to save his house from foreclosure by finding the treasure.
Astin (pictured right at FAN EXPO 2023 in New Orleans on January 8) played the Goonies’ leader, Mikey (left), and went on to have a blossoming film career
Feldman (right at the premiere of ‘NOPE’ last July), now 53, played the sarcastic ‘Mouth’ (left) on The Goonies
It has been reported that the second film, which has reportedly been ‘greenlit’ for production, could hit theaters as early as 2026
Josh Brolin played Mikey’s older brother, Brand Walsh, who was reluctantly dragged into the adventure.
Jeff Cohen played Chunk, the group’s clumsy but beloved friend, known for his “Truffle Shuffle” dance.
Feldman was Mouth, a funny group member with a nose for trouble.
Ke Huy Quan played Data, the gadget enthusiast who used his inventions to help the group escape from dangerous situations.
And the iconic Sloth – played by John Matuszak – was the misunderstood, gentle giant and deformed son of the Fratelli family, who becomes an ally of the Goonies.
Former NFL star John passed away in 1989 at the age of 38 and is forever immortalized in Hollywood history, thanks to his legendary catchphrase, “Hey you guys!”
