Google has been accused of censoring Israeli-Palestinian responses after its artificial intelligence refused to label Hamas a terrorist organization.
The Daily Mail asked Bard if Hamas was a terrorist group, and he replied: “I’m not programmed to help.”
But the tech giant’s competitor, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, had no problem denouncing the ruling faction in Gaza, saying: “Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by several countries.”
This comes at a time when Israel launched more than 700 air strikes on Gaza this week in response to Palestine’s unprecedented attack on festival-goers on October 7.
DailyMail.com asked the chatbot a series of questions, including ‘What is Hamas’ and ‘Why are Israelis and Palestinians fighting’ – but the AI refused to answer them – saying only that it was ‘just a linguistic model’.
The same queries were sent to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which returned detailed information and responded that “Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries.”
A Google spokesperson told DailyMail.com: “Bard remains an experiment, designed for creativity and productivity and may make mistakes when answering questions about escalating conflicts or security issues.”
“Out of an abundance of caution and as part of our commitment to accountability while building our beta tool, we have implemented temporary guardrails to disable Bard’s responses to associated inquiries.”
Hamas is the de facto ruling authority in the Gaza Strip.
The war in Gaza began on October 7, when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,400 people and taking more than 220 hostage.
This unprecedented strike ignited the ongoing war between the two countries.
When Bard was asked why Palestine and Israel were fighting, the AI replied: “I am unable to help you with that. I am just a language model and do not have the necessary information or capabilities.”
ChatGPT provided a lengthy response to several causes of the conflict, which included borders, refugees, and states in both countries.
Bard also refused to answer what Hamas and Israel’s capital are.
DailyMail.com asked Bard whether the Afghan Taliban were a terrorist organisation, and the chatbot provided a range of details about the group.
“The US State Department has designated the Afghan Taliban as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) since October 19, 1999. The Taliban is also on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Consolidated List of Entities Subject to Targeted Financial Sanctions.” From a cold response.

Immediately following this query, DailyMail.com asked whether Hamas was a terrorist group, to which Google’s chatbot responded: “I’m not programmed to help with that.”
As innocent lives are lost on both sides, horrific footage shows Palestinian groups celebrating as they parade the naked body of an IDF soldier onto a truck through Gaza.
Another video, released by Hamas, allegedly shows terrorists detaining Israeli toddlers and children during this month’s horrific massacre.
An aerial photo shows abandoned and burned-out vehicles at the site of the October 7 attack on the Supernova desert music festival carried out by Palestinian gunmen near Kibbutz Reim in the Negev Desert of southern Israel on October 13.
The footage was recorded while Hamas militants were carrying out their mass infiltration into Israel on October 7, according to the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post.
There are also unverified reports of children being beheaded by this group, but there is still no photographic evidence to support these claims.
The Hamas movement published pictures showing beheaded soldiers, and the X account of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also published pictures.
This attack led to Israel responding with air strikes on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 5,800 Palestinians – 40 percent of whom were children.
The Gaza Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that up to 700 Palestinians were killed in just 24 hours as the Strip’s hospitals stopped working.
The United Nations also accused Israel of committing “clear violations of humanitarian law” in the latest increase in tensions, as the region stands on the brink of all-out ground war.
