The Google workers who gained viral fame on TikTok by proudly flaunting their aspirational workplaces now offer a stark and very candid look at their new realities after being laid off.

TikToker Nicole Tsai, who worked out of the company’s Los Angeles office, was among those who used the platform to share a glimpse into her life as one of the tech giant’s employees.

Her enviable vlogs, which have helped her grow her following to over 36,000, have previously featured Google-themed meeting rooms, free lunches and a speakeasy used during ‘happy hours’.

But his latest updates on social media have been far less glamorous after he was among 12,000 workers laid off by the company.

Titled ‘A day in my life getting fired at Google’, Nicole provided a voiceover for the clip, saying: ‘I woke up to this really ominous message from my boss and I honestly had no idea what it was going to be about so I I called her the moment I woke up and saw it…

“I ran downstairs to find that I had lost access to basically everything. I couldn’t log into my email or even check my calendar.

“I called my boss back and we sobbed on the phone because she was also finding out about my layoff for the first time today.”

He continued, “It felt like a really bad game of Russian roulette and there was no consistency as to who got let go and it wasn’t based on performance either, so it was really random.”

Nicole closed the video by admitting that she “didn’t really know what was next” for her, but told viewers that she would continue to document her journey.

But Nicole isn’t the only TikTok user who has shared before-and-after videos of the layoff announcement.

In her clip titled ‘Day In My Life: Office Addition’, the 24-year-old said she had arrived in time to have an office breakfast made for her consisting of French toast and scrambled eggs with crème fraiche.

She then filmed herself working on projects on her laptop before saying that she had started to feel unwell.

Cedoni then showcased one of the other benefits of working for Google when he visited the wellness center on the company’s premises.

‘The layoffs were not based on performance. I got an “exceeds expectations” on my last performance review…it was strictly just that people had to leave because the company needed to save money.

“The layoffs didn’t just affect people at my level, there were vice presidents and directors who were also fired.”

Cedoni wanted to emphasize that he “did not express anger or sadness” during the entire process, knowing that he would be “perfectly fine”.

He added that he is financially stable and said he was considering filing his notice with the company anyway before the news broke.

Google announced that it would lay off 12,000 people on Friday, which equates to about six percent of its workforce.

It’s just the latest tech company to announce cost-cutting measures with Meta, Twitter, Amazon and Microsoft among those that have laid off employees.
