Google TV Streamer price leak reveals big price hike over Chromecast, but it’s still cheaper than Apple TV 4K

Google’s answer to the Apple TV 4K, dubbed the Google TV Streamer, will be cheaper than its Apple rival, according to a pricing report from Google. Dealabs.

According to the French outlet, the Google TV Streamer will launch in Europe for €119, which converts to around $130 / £102 / AU$202 in direct conversion. For the US, UK, and Australia, however, the price will likely be around $129 / £129 / AU$219.

That makes the device cheaper than the Apple TV 4K, one of the best streaming devices, which currently costs between $149.99 / £149 / AU$249 for the Wi-Fi and Ethernet model, but is similar to the price of the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi model, which costs $129 / £129 / AU$219 on average.

It’s worth noting, however, that the Google TV Streamer’s price is quite a bit higher than the company’s Chromecast with Google TV 4K, which costs $49/£49/AU$99.

Google TV Streamer – Need more?

While we don’t have many details about the Google TV Streamer itself, aside from some design changes from the Chromecast and other rumors of an Ethernet port and Threads radio, leaked specs of the Google TV Streamer seem to indicate that it will not support Wi-Fi 6 or 7 for faster streaming speeds.

If that’s the case, it would mean that Google plans to release the TV Streamer at a lower price than the Apple TV 4K, since the latter does support Wi-Fi 6. The addition of an Ethernet port, something you have to pay extra for on the Apple TV 4K, and a USB port are welcome news, as Ethernet connectivity will hopefully negate some of the slower speeds caused by the Google TV Streamer not supporting Wi-Fi 6 or 7.

Since the Google TV Streamer is cheaper than the Apple TV 4K but more expensive than the Chromecast, we’re hoping it gets more features to justify the price increase. We’re hoping for better gaming like on the Apple TV 4K, smoother switching between apps, and why not make it a smart hub for other Google devices too?

The Google TV Streamer’s specs, pricing, and features are all based on rumors and leaks so far, but we believe the device will make its debut at a Google event taking place on Tuesday, August 13. That’s also where we’re expecting to see the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series and the latest Pixel Watch 3.
