Google seems to be working on adding quick access to its AI chatbot Gemini to the drop-down menu that appears in your address bar. If you want to talk to the bot quickly, you can type ‘@gemini’ and you’ll get instant access to the bot.
According to Windows reportChrome will soon get a ‘chat with Gemini’ shortcut to the address bar, so you don’t have to go to the official Gemini website. The feature has yet to become widespread, but you should be able to try it using the ‘chat with Gemini’ keyboard shortcut.
It’s not surprising to see Google making progress with its latest AI assistant in Chrome (en on Chromebooks) – in fact, Gemini was technically implemented in the browser back in February Google has introduced an AI-powered ‘help me write’ feature. Microsoft has been aggressively pushing its own AI helper Copilot for everything from the Edge browser to Windows tablets. Google has shown a more reserved approach to AI tools compared to Microsoft’s bull-in-a-china-shop efforts, but it makes sense that the search engine giant would want to keep up with the competition.
How to use Gemini in Chrome now
You can try typing ‘@gemini’ and see if anything pops up, but as of now it’s not functional – you can’t click on it or select it. It’s still part of a Chrome Canary patch, Google’s channel for testing potential new features for enthusiasts and developers to try and provide feedback on.
If you want to try it out, you can launch it and set it up Chrome Canaryand once the test browser is installed, you can join in chrome://flags in the address bar and press enter. This should take you to the ‘Site Expansion Pack Page’ and you can enable the starter pack.
Restart the browser and you’re done! You should then be able to chat with Gemini from the address bar. Of course, since this is still in testing, there’s no guarantee that it will work flawlessly, and we can’t yet be sure that the feature will make it to the public version of the browser. However, if it makes it to the public, it will be good news for Gemini fans or anyone looking to become more familiar with the ChatGPT alternative.
