- Google admins can now migrate data from Microsoft Teams channels to Chat
- Customizations, including date ranges, are supported
- It is now available to all Google Workspace subscribers
Google has launched a new offensive on the online collaboration market with a new service that makes it easier to migrate Microsoft Teams conversations to its own Chat service.
“We are expanding our data migration experience with the ability for Google Workspace admins to migrate conversations from channels in Microsoft Teams to spaces in Google Chat,” the company said in a Google Workspace update blog post announce the news.
The hope is that companies can implement Google Chat more easily by experiencing less downtime during the transition.
Migration from Teams to Chat just got easier
Within Google Chat’s Chat Migration menu, admins can connect to other Microsoft accounts to import Teams data. Migration cards and ID cards can be uploaded as CSV files, and administrators also have the option to enter the start date from which the messages should be migrated.
“You can also perform a delta migration, which will migrate all messages added to Teams channels since the primary migration. Posts that have already been successfully migrated will be skipped,” Google said.
Administrators can also produce reports based on completed migrations to identify content that was skipped, failed, or had warnings.
Additionally, the feature requires those taking the action to be Google super administrators and Microsoft Teams Global Administrators.
Google said the feature is now available to all Google Workspace users, but a screenshot of the shared process shows a “Beta” icon next to the “Chat Migration” heading. Ny Breaking asked Google to confirm whether the feature is now generally available or if it remains in beta, but we didn’t immediately get a response.
Although Microsoft has settled a complaint that the bundling of Teams into Microsoft 365 puts competitors at a disadvantage, the company still faces distrust, if only from its competitors.
Companies that have yet to use the two platforms (and/or others) may consider turning to Mio. Google previously announced its interoperability with Teams and Zoom using this third-party service in 2024.
