Google announces another round of layoffs as part of ‘large scale’ restructuring

  • Google announced an unspecified number of layoffs on Wednesday
  • Some positions will be moved abroad and other affected positions may reapply internally
  • It follows other brutal cuts by the tech giant earlier this year

Google is laying off a “large” number of employees as other jobs will be shipped overseas, officials announced Wednesday.

The indefinite number of redundancies will not apply to the entire company and affected employees will be able to apply for internal positions, a spokesperson confirmed.

A small percentage of affected positions will have to move to hubs the company invests in, including Chicago, Atlanta, India and Dublin.

The layoffs follow a slew of job cuts at Google and the technology and media industries this year, raising fears that the layoffs will continue as companies grapple with economic uncertainty.

“Throughout the second half of 2023 and through 2024, a number of our teams have made changes to become more efficient and work better, removing layers and aligning their resources with their biggest product priorities,” the spokesperson added to.

Employees from several Google teams in the real estate and finance departments have been affected, one said Business insider report.

The affected finance teams include Google’s treasury, business services and revenue businesses, it added.

Google’s chief financial officer, Ruth Porat, sent an email to staff saying the restructuring includes expanding growth to Bangalore, Mexico City and Dublin.

While the full extent of the cuts is unknown, an employee at the time described them as “quite large-scale.”

Google laid off hundreds of employees across multiple teams in January, including its engineering, hardware and assistant teams, as the company ramps up investments and expands its artificial intelligence offerings.

Company CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly told employees early this year to expect more job cuts.

In January, the company announced it would lay off more than 700 people at its San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Mountain View locations in four separate filings.

Most of those affected worked in the augmented reality hardware team responsible for Pixel, Nest and Fitbit.

The tech giant said it would also permanently close its Mountain View daycare center and lay off 73 teachers and school staff.

The layoffs began on March 10 and were expected to last until August.

They come amid other brutal cuts in Silicon Valley, many of which are coming from other major AI investors like Amazon and Discord.

Technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce and Amazon laid off between six and thirteen percent of their workforce last year.
