The list of 76 books includes a mix of memoirs, gripping thrillers, self-help books and historical fiction, with writers from Britain, Japan, Ireland, the US and beyond.
Trevor Noah‘s biography, about growing up mixed-race in apartheid South Africajoins the memoirs of both Michelle and Barack Obama as well as Michelle Zauner’s memoir Crying in H Mart – about the loss of her mother – in the non-fiction category.
Former child star Jennette McCurdy’s provocative memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, about her abusive late mother, and neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air also won the award.
Kristin Hannah has three books on the list, as does Sally Rooney, while Taylor Jenkins Reid, the mastermind behind Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & the Six, has four books on the list.

Movies seem to play a key role in the selection of well-read books, as dozens of said books had blockbuster adaptations.
Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies (and A Husband’s Secret, which is currently being adapted and will star Blake Lively) is one of the books on the list.
The book was adapted into a film by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and won dozens of Emmys and Golden Globes thanks to its A-list cast, including Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep.
