Golden Globes nominations 2025: Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are rewarded for their starring roles in Wicked as they join Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez and Demi Moore among hopefuls – but Gladiator II is brutally snubbed

If it feels like the dust has only just settled on awards season, that’s because it has.

But with Christmas approaching, one of the busiest programs on the showbiz calendar is ready to return — starting with the 83rd annual Golden Globes on January 7.

And with the nominations in 27 categories announced Monday afternoon, Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were among the first names out of the hat.

Grande – who earned her first-ever Golden Globe nomination – appears in the Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture nomination category thanks to her role as Galinda Upland in the fantasy drama.

The versatile star will compete alongside close friend Selena Gomez for her role in Emilia Perez and Margaret Qualley, who won universally positive reviews for body shock horror The Substance.

Isabella Rossellini also reprises her role in Concave, as does Zoe Saldana (again for Emilia Perez).

Elsewhere, Demi Moore was recognized for her starring role opposite Qualley in The Substance, earning a nomination for Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy.

Grande’s Wicked co-star Arivo has also been richly rewarded for her role as Elphaba, the green witch in the making.

They will face tough competition in one of the ceremony’s biggest categories, with Zendaya also named as Challengers, alongside Amy Adams for Nightbitch, Mikey Madison for Anora and Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez.

British star Eddie Redmayne was also among the early contenders after being named in the Best Television Actor in a Drama Series category for his starring role in Netflix hit The Day Of The Jackal.

The actor faces stiff competition from Jake Gyllenhaal for Presumed Innocent, while Donald Glover also wins a nomination for his role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

There’s another British face on the list, with Gary Oldman’s starring role in the Disney+ series Slow Horses earning him a well-deserved nomination, while Hiroyuki Sanada and Billy Bob Thornton win the honors for Shōgun and Landman respectively.

British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer was also recognized, with the Richard Gadd-written show appearing in the Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture category and lead actress Jessica Gunning being named Best Supporting Actress – Television.

The show will compete with the hugely popular Ripley, controversial biopic Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective: Night Country, Ripley and The Penguin.

Elsewhere, Jon M. Chu and Ridley Scott were surprising omissions in the Best Director – Motion Picture category, despite respective blockbusters Wicked and Gladiator II enjoying huge box office success.
