Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael joked about Scientology during monologue

Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael didn’t mince words in steering Tom Cruise away from the awards ceremony during Tuesday’s ceremony.

Before introducing two of Cruise’s Top Gun co-stars Maverick, Carmichael, 35, appeared with three Golden Globe awards. In 2021, Cruise returned all three of his awards in protest of the lack of black voters at the Golden Globes. Prayed.

He said: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe Awards that Tom Cruise returned.”

The comedian, who began the show by poking fun at Hollywood Foreign Press’s racial issues, added: “I’m just the host… but I do have a pitch.” I think maybe we’ll take these three things and trade them off for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige. Cruise did not attend the ceremony.

Shelly, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, has not been seen publicly since August 2007. It is unclear if Carmichael was implying that Cruise might have some knowledge of Shell’s whereabouts. The actor has been a Scientologist for 30 years.

Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige has not been seen publicly since August 2007.

In 2013, Scientology defector Leah Remini filed a missing person report for Shelly with the Los Angeles Police Department. Later, the department became convinced that the mysterious first lady of religion was fine.

At the time, Scientology said in a statement that Remini’s actions were “ridiculous and reckless self-promotion.”

Following the Carmichael prank, Remini retweeted a Twitter thread he wrote in November 2022 alleging that the LAPD was in cahoots with Scientology.

Scientology has long claimed that Shelly is not a missing person. DailyMail.com has contacted the organization for comment on the Carmichael prank.

The King of Queens star tweeted: ‘WHERE IS SHELLY????’ In a separate message, she said: ‘Thank you Jerrod Carmichael!’

Carmichael was introducing Glen Powell and Jay Ellis when he made the gag.

The couple was about to hand out the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series and they did their job like professionals, without acknowledging the slight against their co-star.

Cruise’s three Golden Globes were for Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Jerry Maguire, Supporting Actor for Magnolia and Actor in a Drama for Born on the Fourth of July.

SlateCulture’s Sam Adams tweeted about Carmichael’s joke saying, “Lol Jerrod doing a Shelly Miscavige joke to completely shut up before introducing two TOP GUN MAVERICK actors.”

It wasn’t the only joke that silenced the crowd at the Beverly Hills Hilton.

Carmichael opened the show by saying, “I’m your host Jerrod Carmichael and I’m going to tell you why I’m here, I’m here… because I’m black.”

‘I’ll tell you what’s been going on on this show, the awards, they didn’t air last year because the Hollywood foreign press association, which I won’t say was a racist organization.

“But they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died, so do what you want with the information. I’ll tell you how I got here, why I’m here on stage with you tonight, well, I was home.”

And I got a phone call from my friend Stephen Hill. Stephen Hill is a great producer and he said, “Jerrod, I’m really honored to make this phone call, he said I’m producing the 80th Golden Globes and I would be honored if you would agree to join as a host.

“I was like, ‘wow, like one minute you’re making a minute tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the black face of a embattled white organization.'” Life really comes at you fast, so I was like, “Stephen, I’m torn, I’ll be honest with you, I’m a little torn because, you know, one, it’s a great opportunity, thanks for the call, but I’m just being asked to host of this, I know, because I am black”.

And Stephen said, let me stop you right there, Jerrod. He said you’re being asked to host this show because you’re talented, you’re being asked to host this show because you’re charming, he said you’re being asked to host this show because you’re one of the greatest comedians of a generation but Stephen is black so what does he know ?

I mean, he’s only producing this show because he’s not going to be told why he’s here, so I said, Stephen, this is a lot for me, let me call you, so I did what I do when I have a moral, racial dilemma.

I call homegirl Avery who, for the sake of this monologue, represents all black people in America. And I said to Avery, I said, Avery, I was asked to host the Golden Globes. And I said, you know, what do I do? And she said, oh, bookie, I’m so proud of you, now remind me what awards show is that again.

‘And I told him what the show was about, and I told him that last year it didn’t air because there were no black people. And she said, well, how much are they paying you? And I said, well, Avery, it’s honestly not about the money, it’s about the moral issue of… and she said, Jerrod, enough of that, how much are you getting paid? And I said $500,000.

“And she said, boy, if you don’t put on a nice suit and take money from white people… And I kind of forget that, like, where I’m from, we all live by a strict take.” -The money mentality.

‘I bet black FBI informants in the ’60s, like, their families were still proud of them like if you heard about Clarence’s new job, they’re paying him $8 an hour just to rat on Dr. King.

“It’s a good government job and I called Stephen back and told him I’m happy to do this.” And he was very proud of that decision.

“I was very proud of that decision, until I received an email from a publicist saying that Helen [Hoehne]the president of the HFPA, wanted to sit with me one on one.

“I said, ‘No thanks, I know when I hear a trap.’ Then they came back like, “Well, they’re not really asking, they’re insisting that you go to the meeting.” And I’m like, “Or what? Am I going to get fired?” So they haven’t had a black host in 79 years and they’re going to fire the first one? I am indisputable.

And he came back again, for the third time: “Helen really just wants to educate you on the changes the organization has made regarding diversity. And I’ll be totally honest with everyone here tonight: I really don’t need to hear it. I took this job assuming I don’t they had changed at all.

‘Heard they got six new black members, congratulations on them, whatever, sure. I’m here, actually, because I look into this room and I see a lot of talented people.
