The UK is entering a ‘golden age’ of film and television with production at record levels, says the British broadcaster Sky’s boss.

According to figures from the British Film Institute, combined spending on production in 2022 was £6.2 billion, the highest reported and £1.83 billion more than pre-Covid levels.

Stephen van Rooyen, CEO of Sky UK and Ireland, told the Mail: ‘This is the golden age of British TV and film – the jewel in the crown of our economy.’

Record: Combined spending on manufacturing in 2022 was £6.2bn, the highest reported and £1.83bn above pre-Covid levels

Sky will open a studio in Elstree this year.

Last month, ministers promised extra support in a strategy to create 1 million extra jobs in the creative industries within ten years.

PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore said Van Rooyen’s comments are “strong support for British talent as an important hub for storytellers, producers and creators alike.”
