A man has been caught on camera making a death-defying jump from a five-storey balcony into a swimming pool to avoid arrest by police.
Police attended the Canopy apartment complex on Simpsons Road on the Gold Coast to conduct a welfare check on a man following calls from concerned neighbors on Sunday.
The man, in his thirties, climbed over the balcony railing of his apartment in an attempt to avoid police.
Residents and neighbors captured the heartbreaking moment the man jumped from the balcony into the apartment complex’s swimming pool.
The images show how police try to convince the man to climb back over the railing to safety.
The man, in his 30s, tried to evade police and climbed over the railing of his fifth-floor apartment (left). He then jumped from the balcony and threw himself into the complex’s swimming pool (right)
“He can’t climb up anymore,” a woman is heard saying before the man lets go of the railing.
“Holy, he jumped.”
It is understood police have called in specialist negotiators to convince the man not to jump.
Incredibly, the man luckily managed to escape and plunged into the pool below, sustaining only minor injuries.
Witnesses claim the man climbed out of the pool, left the complex and ran through a neighbor’s backyard before fleeing on foot into the street.
Officers found the man in his parents’ home late Sunday afternoon.
Police are still investigating the incident and the man has yet to be charged.
