‘Gold Bar’ Bob Menendez’s wife Nadine’s breast cancer diagnosis was revealed a day after she was blamed for his alleged crimes in a bribery trial
Senator Bob Menendez announced Thursday that his wife Nadine has cancer.
The announcement comes on day four of the ongoing corruption trial against the New Jersey Democrat in Manhattan, where he and his wife are both charged with corruption.
“As a result of continued press inquiries and reporters following my wife, she has asked me to disclose her medical condition,” Menendez wrote in a statement Thursday.
‘Nadine suffers from grade 3 breast cancer, for which she must undergo a mastectomy. We are of course concerned about the severity and advanced stage of the disease.’
‘She will need further surgery and possibly radiation. We hope and pray for the best results.”
Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and his wife Nadine are both facing charges in the case
“We ask the press and public to give her the time, space and privacy to manage this challenging health condition as she undergoes surgery and recovers,” the statement said.
The shocking revelation comes a day after Menendez’s legal team threw Nadine under the bus for stockpiling gold bars in the couple’s home without lawmakers’ knowledge.
On Wednesday, the Democrat’s attorney, Avi Weitzman, claimed during opening remarks that the “gold bars were found in a locked closet” and that it wasn’t the lawmaker’s closet, but “it’s Nadine’s closet.”
He then pulled out a photo of the closet and highlighted how it was filled with Nadine’s clothes.
“The senator didn’t know the gold bars were there,” Weitzman told the jury.
Menendez, his wife Nadine and two New Jersey businessmen – Wael Hana and Fred Daibes – have pleaded not guilty to participating in a bribery scheme involving gold bars, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash payments and a luxury Mercedes-Benz convertible.

However, federal prosecutors allege that Menendez was directly involved in the bribery scheme.
“This case is about a public servant who put greed first. Who put his power up for sale,” U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz said Wednesday.
‘This was not politics as usual. This was politics for profit.”
‘He was powerful. He was also corrupt. And what was his price? Gold bars,” Pomerantz said.
“The scheme lined his pockets, it lined his wife’s pockets, and it fed their greed.”
“Menendez abused his positions to feed his own greed and keep his wife happy,” federal prosecutors said.
Judge Sidney H. Stein, who is presiding over the case, told potential jurors Tuesday that renowned lawmakers, former White House officials and even one man believed to be in the running for a Trump vice presidential position could all be summoned to testify in the high-profile corruption case.
The list of potential witnesses released by Stein included: Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Lindsey Graham, RS.C., Tim Scott, RS.C., Cory Booker, DN.J., Tim Kaine, D-Va., Chris Coons, D-Del., Patrick Leahy , D-Vt., Kristen Sinema, I-Ariz., Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.
They also include former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Treasury Secretary. Steve Mnuchin, former senior adviser to President Obama David Axelrod and Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y.
The list of potential witnesses specifically mentions Scott, who is said to be a top choice for Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate.
It also mentions two of the former president’s closest advisers: Mnuchin and Pompeo.
