Fast forward! Gogglebox armchair critics watched Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary pay a quick 30 second tribute to Phillip Schofield on This Morning after he was suspended

Mary Killen turned to her husband Giles and mused, “We don’t know what’s going on, do we, behind the scenes.”

He replied, ‘It’s all very rum. It’s all very rum, Nutty. But Phil leaving the show is a bit like a breakdown in the Matrix, Mary. It’s a glitch No one knows what the glitch is or why it happened, but we’re all doing our best to deal with it.’

Elsewhere, Pete Sandiford noted the stark brevity of This Morning’s (30 second) farewell to Phillip Schofield.

He joked to his sister Sophie, “Okay, now we’ve swept that under the rug for today’s show!” Anyway! Now on to Phil Vickery with a succulent sausage dish!’

Phillip Schofield only received a 30-second tribute at the start of This Morning last Monday, when Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary stepped in after he was fired after 21 years and Holly Willoughby took an early holiday.

The new era also kicked off with Mr Schofield being removed from the show’s credits – less than 48 hours after he left amid reports of a split with his co-star.

Alison and Dermot started the show by briefly discussing his departure, but there was no editing, just a single picture of Phil on screen and about half a minute of warm words.

Alison said: ‘We can’t start today’s show without paying tribute to the man who has sat on the This Morning bench for the past two decades. Phillip Schofield.’

Dermot added: ‘So as a show everyone on and off the screen at ITV and This Morning on say a huge thank you to Phil for what he’s done to make the show such a success over the last 21 years.’

Alison concluded: ‘Simply put, we all know he’s one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had, and we and the whole team wish him all the best for the future.’
