The action-adventure video game series God of War is getting a Prime Video TV adaptation from the creators of The Expanse and Uncharted.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab)will be the live-action series based on events from the critically acclaimed God of War (2018). Rafe Judkins (The wheel of timeUncharted) serves as showrunner and is joined by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) who are co-writing and producing the show with PlayStation Studios for Prime video.
“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers with its expansive and immersive worlds as much as its rich storytelling,” said Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios head of global television. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a memorable way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studio.” I hope it’s one of them best Prime Video shows ever made.
Nation adjustment
Little else is known about the TV adaptation of God of War, but we do know it will follow the premise laid out in the 2018 hit, with Kratos and his estranged son Atreus embarking on a journey around the ashes of his deceased woman from the highest peak of the Nine Realms.
The first God of War was released in 2005, and the video game series now totals five games. God of War (2018) is the fourth game in the popular franchise, but developer Sony Santa Monica caused a stir upon its release. Specifically, the game developer has moved the franchise from its traditional Ancient Greek setting to a focus on Norse mythology. It’s unclear whether Amazon’s God of War TV will also explore the story of the game’s sequel, God of War Ragnarokwhich takes place three years after 2018’s God of War and was released earlier this year.
Amazon’s God of War series isn’t the only PlayStation-inspired TV show in the works. Naughty dogs The last of us gets a live action TV adaptationwhich debuts on HBO max on January 15, 2023. In the meantime, live-action adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, and Gran Turismo have also been greenlit. Amazon Studios is also developing one live-action Fallout series for its streaming service, with Arcane and Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell set to provide.
There’s no official date yet for Amazon’s God of War, let alone any casting announcements. Whichever direction the show goes, it’s certainly in good company.
