Gmail for Android may be getting a new Google Gemini AI button
It’s fair to say that Google hasn’t been shy about trying to shove its Gemini AI bot into just about every possible app – and the indications are that the Gmail app for Android could be the latest to get an infusion of Gemini’s artificial intelligence. intelligence magic.
This comes from a well-known tipster AssemblyDebug And Android Authority, and it is based on an APK (Android Application Package) teardown. Essentially, this means digging through the app code to find features that aren’t already enabled for the user.
One of those features is now a Gemini button on the top toolbar. Tapping it will bring up a prompt box for Gemini, so you might want to let the AI bot summarize some of your emails, or compose a reply to a message in your inbox.
This was actually first noticed in April, although the toolbar button wasn’t visible at the time. It also matches some of the functionality that paying Google Workspace users can already get in Gmail, so it’s no surprise to see it appear for more people.
AI summaries
Gemini AI can clearly be useful in sifting through long emails and conversation threads, picking out key points as necessary – although it’s important to remember that AI is still not 100% reliable, and may never be become.
You’re on safer ground if AI summarizes instead of creating text, because it doesn’t have to invent anything new. However, there is still no guarantee that Gemini AI wouldn’t miss something essential in one of the summaries because it misunderstands the meaning of a group of words or a sentence.
If you really need to be precise and on top of something in your inbox, you’re still better off reading it yourself. Of course, people can make mistakes too, but you understand the people you’re emailing with and what they’re emailing about. You don’t just weigh the probability of word combinations.
The Android Authority team also managed to get Gemini AI to change the tone of draft emails and explain how to complete tasks in Gmail. However, so far there is no word on when the feature will go live for users.
