The royal couple’s positive message came just minutes after a heartfelt statement from King Charles III, in which he called all Olympians “a source of inspiration.”

The Prince congratulated them on their ‘exceptional successes’ and stressed in the message, sent just hours before the final moments of the Olympic Games in the French capital, their “pure talent, real willpower and hard work”.

At 21:00 (20:00 BST) a magnificent closing ceremony will take place at the Stade de France.

In his full statement he said: ‘My wife joins me in extending my warmest congratulations to the competitors and their support teams from Team GB and the entire Commonwealth on their many extraordinary successes at the Paris Olympic Games.

‘Your achievements, in so many different disciplines, are the result of that priceless combination of pure talent, perseverance and years of hard work. In recent weeks, those achievements have been complemented by sportsmanship and team spirit, in the best tradition of the Games.

Great Britain finished the Olympic Games in Paris with 65 medals, the same as in London 2012. It is the second highest number of medals ever abroad.

They came in third, behind the United States (126) and China (91).

But Team GB won eight fewer gold medals than they did in Tokyo three years ago and were 13 points behind, compared to the 27 they collected at Rio 2016.

With 14 gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze medals, Great Britain dropped to seventh in the medal table – its lowest finish since 10th at Athens 2004 – and to the third best European nation behind hosts France and the Netherlands.

Traditional Olympic sports such as athletics, cycling and swimming delivered medals, while rowing left the nightmare of Tokyo behind to win three gold medals in a strong regatta.

But newer sports such as skateboarding, taekwondo and trampolining also enjoyed success, while Team GB won their first medal in sport climbing.

However, Team GB has no time to rest: it has already started planning for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles by securing Stanford University as its exclusive preparation camp.

A star-studded show will bring the two-week sporting spectacle to an end on Sunday evening.
