His lawyers insist no mug shot is necessary as his face is the most recognizable in the world.

But former President Donald Trump was understandably but unusually glum as he entered the courtroom today to face criminal charges.

Throughout the historic day in New York City, his facial expression shifted from triumphant (fist pumping to fans outside Trump Tower) to fearful (as he arrived at the Manhattan Criminal Court).

Inside, his mood seemed to drop further.

When he emerged after his fingerprints were taken and rights read, he looked decidedly outraged by the proceedings.

Sat inside at the defense table, the 76-year-old was hunched over with curiosity. He pleaded not guilty to all 34 counts.

As the case progresses, these are the portraits of a former president on an unprecedented day in American history.
