Glitzy 1990s Portland mansion that sits on 40-acre estate becomes city’s most expensive home after being listed by its Ritz-Carlton developer owner for $15 million
The most expensive mansion in Portland is on the private market for $15 million.
Walter Bowen, the developer of the new Ritz Carlton hotel and residential tower in downtown Portland, has put his 40-acre estate near Forest Park up for sale.
Bowen’s English Tudor Revival mansion, also known as the English Oaks Estate, is the most expensive residential home for sale in Portland. The 16,828-square-foot home sits on a 120-acre development shared by three owners.
The second-place property in terms of price is the Tahoma penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton with an asking price of $8,999,000.
The developer purchased the Tudor Revival mansion in 1993. The four-story brick home features Ipe wood floors, marble-topped fireplaces, seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and three powder rooms. Additional features include a turret, slate roof, home theater, guest apartment and fly fishing workshop.

For the house, which was completed in 1996, Soderstrom Architects were hired to design a home inspired by “the romance of the English countryside,” according to the property description.
The formal living room has box beam ceilings, while the dining room has a trio of French doors leading to the gardens.
The 400-square-foot kitchen is equipped for large gatherings with a butler’s pantry and prep kitchen. The kitchen features stainless steel appliances and a temperature-controlled wine cabinet.
To reach the primary two-bedroom suite, you have the option of climbing the grand staircase with wrought iron balusters or the wood-paneled elevator.
The suite features three walk-in closets, one with dedicated tie storage, as well as a corner office, bar and balcony.
The lower level game room has a full bar with a refrigerator, sink, stove and dishwasher.
Stepping outside, the pool, hot tub and waterfall overlook the horseshoe-shaped rose garden.

The two garages can accommodate six cars, while the car park next to the motor court can accommodate a further twenty cars.
Terry Sprague of LUXE Forbes Global Properties has listed the property for sale. He told the Oregonian/OregonLive that the craftsmanship, from the lighting fixtures to the hand-painted murals, mimics the style of a luxury home from a century ago.
“For someone who seeks privacy and security and who truly understands a legacy-style estate, this is one of the finest properties of its kind in the country and unique to Portland,” Sprague said.
Property taxes on the mansion are approximately $89,000 per year.
