Glamorous female prison officer, 26, ‘had secret phone sex with inmate who he called his “Mrs”, spoke to the crook daily… and even met up with his mother’

A female prison officer had secret phone sex with a prisoner and even met his mother, a court has heard.

Warden Ruth Shmylo, 26, is accused of having an 'inappropriate relationship' with an unnamed inmate at HMP Parc in Bridgend, South Wales.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that the prisoner gave Shmylo a mobile number on a piece of paper and that she would call him on it for 'teenage style' chats.

The inmate had “daily” contact with Shmylo and had phone sex with her and called her his “ma'am”, the court heard. The inmate also contacted her on her birthday and said 'congratulations princess girl' and arranged for his mother to meet her.

Shmylo, a former custody officer at the 1,652-capacity Category B prison, is said to have maintained a relationship between December 2020 and April 2021 before she failed her probation and left.

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe said Shmylo should have reported the inmate to prison officials because he had a secret phone behind bars, but instead chose to call him.

Mr Cobbe said: 'The inappropriate relationship is evidenced by recordings of calls made by the prisoner to Miss Shmylo after he moved from Parc Prison to HMP Manchester.

'The recordings between him and Miss Shmylo relate to a time when she was no longer employed at Parc Prison. Nevertheless, the tone of those conversations points to a fair and certain inference that she had had an inappropriate relationship with him while he was in Parc prison.”

Mr Cobbe said Shmylo made “several confessions” to police after being arrested by telephone.

One of her alleged admissions to officers was that she had had phone sex with the inmate.

Mr Cobbe said: 'She admitted during her interview that she had had phone sex with the prisoner.

'She explained that it was mainly the inmate saying things to her, noting that 'I listened to most of it.'

“That means she was actively engaged in phone sex with the inmate – or part of it.”

Mr Cobbe said the secret relationship started while they were in Parc Prison but came to light after the prisoner was transferred to HMP Manchester and their conversations were recorded.

Mr Cobbe said: 'She explained that the prisoner had slid a number on a piece of paper towards her. She explained how to call his number and said she felt pressured to call him.

“Because she had that number, she did not report that he gave her his number, she did not report that she felt pressure to call, she did not report that she called that number, or that he called a cell phone .

“She said she felt trapped after taking that inmate's number. In reality, according to the prosecutor, she had a number of options and choices she could have made.

“She could and should have refused to take the number, she could and should have reported the incident to jail staff, she could and should have reported that he appeared to have a cell phone, and she could and should have chosen to not to do that. to call his number. Instead, she chose to call his number.”

Shmylo said the inmate would contact her “pretty much every day.” She said the inmate threatened to harm another inmate if she stopped answering his calls.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Shmylo told police that to protect the other prisoner, she kept him locked in his cell all day to keep him away from her secret lover.

Mr Cobbe said: 'She further explained in her interview that the prisoner forced her to meet his mother.

'During her meeting with his mother, his mother told her everything about him, the prisoner.

“He told Miss Shmylo that he wanted her to know what he was really like – and who better to tell them than his mother.

“When she told him she didn't want to meet his mother, he said she had better go because his mother had done her best, including cutting her nails.”

Mr Cobbe said the inmate called Shmylo 'his madam' in phone calls and that they had a relationship for 'five months', but at one point she tells him he is in the 'friend zone' and he should accept it .

The court heard that Shmylo was employed at Parc Prison between August 2020 and April 2021, but failed to complete her probation and was 'released'.

The conversations were recorded in the weeks after she left her job at Parc and the prisoner was transferred to HMP Manchester.

Shmylo, of Treforest, Pontypridd, denies misconduct in public office.

The trial, expected to last five days, continues.
