Jamie Carragher has ridiculed Erik ten Hag after comparing the Dutch manager's record at Manchester United with that of Gary Neville at Valencia.

The match came after Man United suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday afternoon, the Red Devils' fourth game without a win in what has been a turbulent season so far.

Ten Hag's team have now dropped to eighth place in the Premier League, having lost eight games so far this season. The most United have lost before Christmas than in any season since 1930, with pressure now mounting on the Dutch manager.

The 53-year-old was appointed manager of the club in April 2022, with the Dutchman now in charge of 88 games in two seasons, while also leading United to the League Cup title last season.

But today his managerial record this season came under scrutiny by a football fan on X (formerly Twitter), who compared the Dutchman's record with Neville's slightly more favorable record during his time as Valencia boss.

“Ten Hag 23/24, 26 games, 13 losses, 33 goals, 41 goals conceded,” the X user wrote.

Neville, meanwhile, managed Valencia between December 2015 and March 2016, before being sacked after a disastrous four months in charge.

The user also wrote: 'Gary Neville in Valencia, 28 games, 11 losses, 39 goals, 38 goals conceded.'

By comparison, Neville has played two more games and suffered two fewer defeats than Ten Hag, with his team scoring six more goals and conceding three fewer than Man United this season.

And Carragher noted the favorable record and jokingly suggested that Neville would take over from Ten Hag as United boss.

“Give it Gary until the end of the season,” he said on X, echoing viral Man United fan Andy Tate, who once urged David Moyes to be sacked and replaced by Ryan Giggs.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus continued their good scoring streak for Moyes' side on Saturday, their 20th defeat of the calendar year – something that did not happen to United in 1989.

Despite not scoring in their last four games in all competitions, Ten Hag claimed his side were dominant against West Ham.

“I think we controlled the game and we didn't give West Ham United anything,” he said after the match.

'We were so dominant in the build-up and also created opportunities in transition. I think the first three chances of the game were ours; we have to take them with us.'

Nevertheless, he added: 'We defended very well there for 90 minutes, that should always be the case. We are currently underperforming. There are reasons for that.

“We have a lot of injuries, so the team will be better if the injuries return, so we have to stay calm, stay together and stick to the plan. We have to do it together.'
