Girder of an under-construction bridge collapses in Jharkhand’s Giridih
A girder of an under-construction bridge over the Arga river collapsed and a pillar toppled during heavy rain in Jharkhand’s Giridih district, an official said on Sunday.
There have been no reports of injuries, he said.
The incident took place on Saturday evening in Deori block, about 235 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The bridge is being constructed on the Fatehpur-Bhelwagati road to connect Dumritola and Karipahri villages.
Executive Engineer of Road Construction Department, Giridih, Vinay Kumar told PTI, “The bridge is under construction. A single span of the bridge collapsed due to heavy rain on Saturday evening and a pillar toppled. The contractor has been asked to rebuild the section .”
However, he did not disclose the project costs of the bridge.
Sources said the bridge will cost around Rs 5 crore and will connect the remote villages of Giridih in Jharkhand and Jamui district in Bihar.
The casting of the girder was done a week ago and it took at least 28 days to be strengthened, another engineer said.
