β€œOne of the two (teams) unfortunately has to lose… it's been a wonderful journey,” he said.

“It could be my last match.”

The defender indicated that he would take a few days to talk to his family before making a final decision.

LAFC's loss in Columbus marks its third loss in a final this year, with the team also falling at the final hurdles of the Campeones Cup and CONCACAF Champions League.

Still, Chiellini said: “The club, the organization, must be proud.”

On Thursday, the Italian provided some context for his impending decision.

“I'm still unsure,” he said. 'I have to understand what to follow – whether it is my head, whether it is my heart, whether it is my leg. And a lot of different calls have come in over the past few weeks.”

β€œI arrived last year with a lot of dreams and hopes,” he continued. 'But I could never have imagined what I have experienced in these eighteen months. It's something that got into my heart and into my blood.'
