The candid responses came as Gillian discussed her latest project, Want, a book about women’s sexual fantasies.

Inspired by Nancy Friday’s 1973 classic My Secret Garden, the book features anonymous letters from women revealing their deepest fantasies.

The X-Files actress delved deeper into the shame that still surrounds women’s desires, finding it “shocking” that many women, including herself, still feel inhibited about expressing their desires, even in private.

Gillian played a sexologist in the Netflix series Sex Education, but she admitted she found it difficult to put her own fantasies on paper for the book, showing that even a Hollywood star is not immune to the pressures society places on women.

Gillian, who was in a relationship with The Crown creator Peter Morgan for four years, said the project aimed to unite women and men and encourage them to accept themselves. to encourage greater openness and understanding, despite the cultural taboos that still exist.

Looking back on her career, Gillian credited her role as the confident DS Stella Gibson in The Fall with helping her discover her own sexual power at the age of 40.

She said, “It’s only been in the last three or four years that I’ve felt comfortable enough in my own skin… to show more of that aspect of myself.”

Now approaching 60, Gillian admits she is starting a new chapter in her life, both professionally and personally.
