The TV presenter, 45, revealed to his fans on Instagram last year that he had undergone ankle arthroscopy and lateral ligament reconstruction.
And it appears that Gethin has had complications since the surgery when he was spotted wearing the support clothing.
He cut a causal figure in a black padded jacket and black jeans, pulling the gear over his clothes on his left leg.
Gethin is a regular presenter on BBC's Morning Live, which he presents four to five times a week.

BBC Morning Live has just unveiled its confirmed line-up and brand new timeslot – which now overlaps with ITV's Lorraine and This Morning – in the hope of building on its daily audience of around 1.1 million.
That means This Morning could 'lose the daytime TV crown' as its rival BBC Morning Live aims to dominate the ratings.
The ITV breakfast show has won 18 National Television Awards for best daytime show and since Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield left the show, the BBC could now steal the spotlight.
From January 2, Helen Skelton and Michelle Ackerley will become the regular presenters of BBC Morning Live, alternating with Gethin every Monday to Wednesday.
Gethin Jones will continue to present four to five shows per week.
Kym Marsh will present on Thursday, while a host of brilliant guest presenters including Sara Cox, Kimberley Walsh, Gaby Roslin and Rav Wilding will regularly co-host.
BBC One has extended its running time from 45 minutes to 75 minutes, every weekday from 9.30am to 10.45am.
ITV's Good Morning Britain runs from 6am, Lorraine starts the show at 9am, This Morning then runs from 10am to 12.30pm and Loose Women airs for an hour from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

Gethin was famously engaged to fellow Welsh star Katherine Jenkins before the pair split in December 2011 after dating for five years.
Speaking in 2014, mezzo-soprano Katherine claimed it was Gethin who initiated their split, shortly before embarking on a world tour.
She: told Wales Online: 'When Gethin and I split at the end of 2011 the reality was that about two weeks later I had to go on a UK tour where I spend every night singing songs about heartbreak and every day just trying to find the energy to to deal with it, let alone get on stage and understand why he's doing it.

While Katherine has since married painter and filmmaker Andrew Levitas, with whom she is raising two children, Gethin's last known relationship was with German underwear model Katja Zwara.
The couple split in 2018 after a year of dating, with a source confirming to The Sun: 'Gethin and Katja remain friends but things didn't quite work out in the end.
“They broke up last month and went their separate ways.”
Gethin also briefly dated TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh before the couple amicably split in 2014.
