Getafe unveils deadline day signing of Mason Greenwood with video of fans celebrating his arrival, despite Man United stripping the star after a six-month investigation into his dropped criminal charges

Getafe announced the signing of Mason Greenwood with a video of fans celebrating the arrival of the former Man United striker.

Supporters had gathered in the club’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium, waiting for an announcement, and started jumping and chanting when the news finally arrived.

The Spanish club does not pay a fee for the English striker, but does pay a small contribution towards his wages for the duration of the loan.

Greenwood has not played league football since December 2021, having been arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of criminal offences, including attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was subsequently suspended by the club, but in February the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges after crown witnesses backed down and new material came to light.

United subsequently completed their own investigation and ruled that Greenwood had not committed the offenses he was accused of, but decided his future no longer remained at Old Trafford.

Shortly after signing Greenwood, Getafe posted the video of jubilant fans on social media with the caption “The Coliseum a few minutes ago.”

They had faced competition for the striker, with Olympiacos, Red Star Belgrade and Lazio also interested.

Lazio had held extensive talks about signing Greenwood on the last day of the summer transfer window, but ran out of time to finalize a deal with United.

Italy squad president Claudio Lotito claims Greenwood was keen to join the Serie A club, but United failed to sign the paperwork in time.

“I tried to the last minute,” Lotito said La Lazio Siamo Noi shortly after the Italian transfer window closed on Friday night.

Greenwood joins a club that are twelfth in La Liga after winning, drawing and losing in their first three games.

They finished 15th last season but were just two points above the relegation zone in an overstretched bottom half.

Getafe’s next game will be a tough test against Real Madrid, although they will be supported by a creditable 0-0 draw against Spanish champions Barcelona last month.
