Getafe manager Jose Bordalas defended Mason Greenwood and the 22-year-old as a ‘great guy showing exemplary behaviour’ after Jude Bellingham was reported to LaLiga for allegedly calling the striker a ‘rapist’.

The two English players faced off in their first meeting of the season, after Greenwood moved to LaLiga side Getafe in September last year and Bellingham signed for Real Madrid in June.

During the Thursday evening match, Bellingham delivered a hard tackle on the Getafe player to force the ball out of play. As footage of the incident circulated on social media, fans thought they had heard the England international mutter the word ‘rapist’ at the attacker.

This was because Greenwood had previously been charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behavior in January 2022. However, the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old striker mutually agreed to leave former side Manchester United on loan following the conclusion of an internal investigation into the player’s off-field conduct.

Greenwood hoped he could help Getafe beat Real Madrid on Thursday afternoon. However, thanks to a brace from Joselu, they lost the match 2-0.

During a post-match interview, Getafe head coach Bordala was disappointed with not only the result, but also the treatment of Greenwood – saying he is a ‘great guy who shows exemplary behaviour’.

Speaking about Bellingham’s alleged defamation, the Spaniard said: ‘I know the same as you. It is not up to me, it is the club, La Liga and the Federation who have to judge that.

“All I can say is I ask for respect from Mason Greenwood because he’s a great guy. He is a man who respects everyone and exhibits exemplary behavior.”

Getafe decided to take action after the match and referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea included the alleged insult in his match report.

Doing so could still subject Bellingham to disciplinary proceedings from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), although it could be difficult to prove without audio.

Getafe also reported the incident to the LaLiga official who was present at the Estadio Coliseum to record the alleged insult, although the club has not lodged a formal complaint with Bellingham.
