Get behind us! Maro Itoje calls on England fans to support their under-fire World Cup stars ahead of their opener against Argentina… as he insists ‘we want to be part of something special’
Maro Itoje has called on the nation to get behind England’s underdog narrative in Saturday’s World Cup opener with Argentina.
After a disastrous, defeat-plagued warm-up campaign, the team will be hoping to tap into the feel-good atmosphere created by Lionesses and Ashes cricketers this summer.
England have been written off as World Cup contenders, but Lock Itoje said defiantly: ‘We know who we are, we know the type of players we have, we know the quality of coaches we have.
‘We haven’t played as well as we could, but we know the potential of this group, you know the attitude of the players and the coaches and you can only fill that with confidence.

After a poor warm-up campaign, the team hopes to tap into good vibes at the World Cup
‘We want to be part of something special and that starts this weekend.
“We have seen how England get behind their national teams and we want to produce rugby that gets the country behind us.”
However, Itoje has his work cut out for him against a powerful Argentinian pack at the Stade Velodrome.
England lost to the Pumas at Twickenham in November, but a win would improve the mood around a struggling team.
