Gerwyn Price’s wife breaks down in tears after his dramatic sudden-death leg win over Joe Cullen at the Darts World Championship – as former world champion reaches the last 16 despite squandering an initial three-set lead
Gerwyn Price’s wife broke down in tears after his dramatic victory over Joe Cullen in the World Darts Championship.
Price looked on his way to a comfortable victory when he took a 3-0 lead in the first evening match against Alexandra Palace on Friday.
However, Cullen clawed his way back by winning the next three sets in dramatic fashion, creating an incredible finale.
Price advanced to the next round after recording a 4–3 victory following a dramatic sudden death.
The 39-year-old told Sky Sports: ‘That was tough. I just wanted to get over the winning line, every set he kept coming back to it. The crowd was behind him. I actually thought I was going to lose it, but I stayed in it and crossed the line.
‘He played good darts at the right times. I honestly don’t know, I missed the doubles and I just look around and think ‘wow, how am I in this position?’. I put myself in those positions, but I pulled myself out of it and luckily got the win.
‘In the last set I kept breaking and couldn’t hold my throw. I probably wanted it too much and tried too hard.
“I’ve got a lot more in the tank. I can play much better than tonight. I didn’t play brilliantly, but I did enough to win in the end.
‘Alexandra Palace is not the best place for me, but it means a lot to me to win on any day of the week.’
