Leeds have taken a major transfer blow after Bayer Leverkusen’s Nadiem Amiri made the shock last-minute decision to turn down a move to the club.
The German midfielder looked poised to join the Championship squad after a £5 million fee was agreed.
Amiri – who has five caps to his name for his country – had been identified as a key target by Leeds boss Daniel Farke, who are desperate to sign up before the end of the transfer window after a tumultuous summer in which a large squad has run away.
However, Mailsport understands that Amiri flew to Leeds with his family from Düsseldorf on Monday to have a look around the city, while also visiting the club’s Thorp Arch training ground and holding talks with key figures at Elland Road.
It all seemed that the move would go through without any hassle before the 26-year-old – who was spotted by Leeds supporters on his tour of the city – shocked the whites by ruling against the move and pulled out of the deal.

According to German Outlet KickerPersonal terms were agreed and Amiri had made his commitment to sign before his major turnaround.
The report also says the midfielder was in doubt about a move to a Championship side after Leeds collected just five points from their first four league games.
In addition, the imminent birth of his first child within two weeks also left him doubting whether it was the right time to move.
He would sign a four-year contract with Elland Road which would have seen him earning a higher wage than he is now at Leverkusen, with his current contract expiring at the end of this season.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Amiri, with the midfielder out of favor in Germany and time running out before other clubs can come to an agreement.
Meanwhile, Leeds – who have already lost the likes of Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Robin Koch, Max Wober, Jack Harrison and Marc Roca this summer – must now focus on other targets as the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday.
However, Mailsport also understands that a move from Genk winger Joseph Paintsil – another attacking option Farke wanted – has stalled as his previous club Tema Youth claimed a discount on a possible deal.
In any case, Leeds managed a dramatic 4-3 victory over Ipswich on Saturday, which was a welcome boost for the club.
Farke’s side return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Salford City in the second round of the Carabao Cup before hosting Sheffield Wednesday in a Yorkshire derby on Saturday.
