Germany have missed out on the World Cup during the group stage for the second year in a row, crushing fans’ hopes of glory and leaving exhausted players crying on the pitch.

After failing to win either of their first two matches, Germany needed a win over Costa Rica tonight and for Spain to defeat Japan.

While beating Costa Rica 4-2, Japan clinched first place in Group E with a 2-1 victory over Spain, leaving Hansi Flick’s men in third place and Costa Rica at the bottom of the table.

The Germans hit the post three times during Thursday’s game in what will no doubt haunt the players as they have to pack their bags so early in the tournament.

Meanwhile, during the match between Japan and Spain, one particular call that went Japan’s way is likely to spark outrage among German fans.

Japan managed to keep the ball in play by millimeters before scoring the goal that finally kept Spain at bay.

Fans have already taken to social media to label it a ‘dubious goal’, while German media criticize the national team for the ‘humiliating’ defeat.

A possible early exit from the World Cup was previously branded “a 10x disaster” for the Germans, with some warnings that it could spell the end of Flick’s coaching career.

The last time they reached the round of 16 was Euro 2020, but they were beaten 2-0 by England.

The humiliating elimination will be welcomed by English fans after a long and well-documented rivalry between the two teams.

It comes after world number two ranked Belgium were knocked out of the tournament earlier today.

In Group F, Morocco topped the table and advanced to the round of 16 with Croatia after the shock elimination.
