German press slams ‘shameful’ departure of Women’s World Cup after they crash in HUGE shock in group stage

  • Germany drew 1-1 against South Korea in the last match in Group H
  • Never before had they failed to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup

German media have labeled their women’s team’s departure from the World Cup a ‘disgrace’ after crashing out of the tournament in the group stage.

The Germans – who never reached the quarter-finals – were held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea, who finished them third in Group H behind Morocco and Colombia.

And the German press has not held back in their criticism of their failure to qualify for the last 16, with Bild calling it a ‘historic World Cup debacle’ and a ‘horror’.

Die Welt, a national daily, labeled it a “disgrace” and the “biggest embarrassment” in the history of the women’s team, which finished runners-up to England in last year’s European Championship final.

Two-time World Cup winners Germany would have gone to the knockouts with a victory, but it proved elusive and they were sent off after Morocco beat Colombia 1-0 in Thursday’s other Group H match.

The German players were visibly emotional after their shock exit was confirmed.

Germany, number 2 in the world, fell behind early on when Cho So-hyun scored in the sixth minute.

Star striker Alexandra Popp equalized for Germany just before half-time with a powerful header, but the European giants were unable to find a winner after the break in a game that lasted a whopping 107 minutes.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall, speaking as an expert on the BBC, blamed over-reliance on Popp for Germany being knocked out of the tournament.

The national team’s official Twitter account simply wrote, “We’re out,” followed by three broken heart emojis.

Former England international Fara Williams described Morocco’s progress at Germany’s expense as the “biggest shock in the women’s game”.

‘Wow. I’m in shock, really. That’s the biggest shock in women’s play,” Williams told the BBC.

‘For Germany, European Championship finalist only a year ago who was eliminated in the group stage after going into the group stage as a favourite. For me it is the biggest shock.

“It was the most disappointing performance by the Germans in the last two games, so it was deserved.”
