Appalled newspapers in Germany on Wednesday denounced their country’s shock 2-1 defeat to Japan at the World Cup.
Japan launched a comeback in the second half, producing a stunning surprise against the 2014 World Cup winners, taking the lead through Ilkay Gundogan in the 33rd minute.

Leading outlet Bild described the result as a ‘debacle’ as Germany failed to put the game to bed
Leading German outlet Welt insisted Germany had made another ‘fool of themselves’ at the start of a major tournament after losing 1-0 to Mexico in their opening game of the 2018 World Cup.
The four-time champion therefore dropped out in the group stage four years ago and could do the same in Qatar, with crucial games against Spain and Costa Rice ahead.

Admitting that Hansi Flick’s side is ‘confused’, Kicker also heavily criticized the conduct of the Germans in the second half and was joined Imagewho called the defeat a ‘debacle’.
Bild wrote after the defeat: “The debacle is reminiscent of the bitter tournament in Russia in 2018, where Germany lost 1-0 to Mexico and was eliminated for the first time in the group stage.”
After leading 1–0 from the penalty spot in the first half, Germany’s intensity waned as Serge Gnabry and Gundogan missed a handful of fruitful chances to extend their lead.
Due to the defeat, Flick’s team cannot afford to slip against Spain on Sunday, otherwise it will be eliminated again in the group stage.
