The German Football Association will reportedly speak to Julian Nagelsmann and Matthias Sammer about Hansi Flick’s succession as manager of the national team.

Flick was sacked as head coach after a meeting with shareholders on Sunday, just nine months before the 2024 European Championship on home soil.

The former Bayern Munich manager had a hugely unsuccessful spell in charge of the national team, with a 4-1 defeat to Japan on Saturday ultimately being the last straw.

Rudi Voller has been named interim manager for Tuesday night’s friendly with France and could go ahead for the European Championship, but the DFB are exploring their options. according to De Telegraaf.

Nagelsmann, who parted ways with Bayern Munich in March this year, is currently the favorite to get the role on a permanent basis.

Sammer is also in the running. The German legend was sporting director of Bayern Munich and currently works part-time as a consultant for Borussia Dortmund. He previously managed Stuttgart and Dortmund in the early 2000s.

A statement released by the national team on Sunday confirmed that Flick had been fired.

President of the German Football Association Bernd Neuendorf said: ‘The committees agreed that the senior men’s national team needs fresh impetus after recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country.

“For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So the decision was inevitable.’

Jurgen Klopp is also admired by Germany, but the 56-year-old is committed to Liverpool and would like to fulfill his contract at Anfield before considering taking charge of the national team.

And while Klopp has not ruled out a move in the future, the Liverpool boss is likely to say no to leading Germany to the European Championship next summer, with three years left on his contract at Anfield.

Reports in Germany suggest the association is ‘in love’ with Klopp and is considering a move for the Liverpool boss at the end of the season. But Nagelsmann, who is still legally under contract with Bayern, would be the favorite.

Flick’s Germany were eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Japan, a result that left them third in their group.

The national team has been in a real rut since Flick saw his side lose to Belgium, Poland, Colombia and Japan, while drawing against Ukraine in June.

Germany face a difficult test on Tuesday when they host World Cup finalists France in a friendly at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

They have already automatically qualified for Euro 2024 as hosts of the tournament.
